Spanish Jews/Sephardic Music
Also known as Sephardic or Sephardi Jews. By royal decree they were expelled from Spain in 1492. Many of them practiced their faith in secret and were the first victims of the Spanish Inquisition. Those that converted to “Christianity” were called conversos or by the derogatory term of marranos which means pigs in Spanish. I consider their expulsion from Spain, a country they had inhabited for over 2,5000 years to be the WORST thing the Royal family of Spain could have ever done. A country that prior to the lunacy brought on by overzealous, ignorant, overly fanatical Christians, was one of the most tolerant countries in the world. The music of Sephadic Jews luckily lives on and many people, especially those of us descendants of conversos are beginning to discover.
Once Upon a Time- ABC New TV Series
I haven’t looked forward to a Sunday night TV show since the X-Files ended 10 years ago. I was a little skeptical at first since it is from the producers of the show Lost, a show I personally never got what all the hype was about. This show started off great and end its first season with a bang. I hope it continues to do well. So far it’s a clever show with a brilliant concept.

Retrato en Sepia- Isabel Allende
Esta novela cuenta la prodigiosa historia de Aurora del Valle, criada por su excéntrica y ambiciosa abuela Paulina del Valle. Esta es la secuela de “Hija de la Fortuna”. Aurora es producto de la relación de Lyn (hija de Eliza Sommers y Tao Ch’ien) con Matías; el hijo mayor de Paulina. Después de 30 años Aurora decide ir en busca de su brumoso pasado familiar debido a unas pesadillas que la acechan desde que llego a parar en el palacete de su abuela paterna Paulina. Criada en un ambiente privilegiado tanto en San Francisco como en Chile poco a poco Aurora va armando el rompecabezas de su vida y se llega a encontrar a si misma en el proceso. En esta grandiosa novela vemos personajes de “La Casa de los Espíritus” como Nívea y Severo del Valle. Me encanta como Isabel Allende describe con mucho detalle los paisajes del Sur de Chile tanto que me parece estar viviéndolos con la propia Aurora en sus cabalgatas por ese paisaje mágico lleno de bosques, lagos cristalinos y la imponente Cordillera de los Andes. Después de “La Casa de los Espíritus” este es mi segundo favorito de Isabel Allende. Después de 10 largos años volví a re-leer esta majestuosa novela. Una lectura que vale la pena.

Enza Pagliara is an Italian folk singer. I recently discovered this Italian folk singer and fell in love with her voice. Indeed music is the universal language.
Hija de la Fortuna
Me encanta este libro. Es lo que llaman ficción histórica que trata acerca del “gold rush” que hubo en el Estado de California en el siglo 19. Eliza Sommers es una joven chilena que vive en Valparaíso y desconoce su verdadero origen. Se embarca en una gran aventura hacia California en busca de su amante. En este lugar descubrirá su verdadero destino y encontrara el amor. Lo volví a leer después de varios años y fue un verdadero placer sumergirme de nuevo en esta fascinante historia de la cual he aprendido mucho pero sobretodo aprendí que la codicia y crueldad del ser humano no tiene límites. Sin embargo los personajes de Eliza y Tao’Chien nos enseñan también la fortaleza del espíritu humano.

The Help
I loved this book! The characters and set of stories were fantastic. My favorite characters were Celia, Aibeleen and Skeeter. Unlike many I did not find Celia to be the typical dumb blonde, in fact out of all the characters she was probably the most color blind. Hilly was nothing more than a vindictive witch who was clearly unsatisfied with her life and was a clear example of the ignorance of the time. The movie was equally wonderful and I’m more than glad to have read the book, now a favorite.
